The 2025 season kicked off with a bang in Melbourne as another Australian Open concluded. Jannik Sinner reclaimed his second straight Australian Open title, while after 46 Grand Slam appearances, Madison Keys was finally crowned champion.
Sinner defeated 2023 GATC player Alexander Zverev in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 for his third Grand Slam title. Keys defeated Aryna Sabalenka, who was vying for her third straight Australian Open title, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Coming off a dominant performance in 2024, Sinner showed no doubt that he is contending for another strong year in 2025. With the finals win, he earned his 21st consecutive hard-court match win coming off the streak from last year. En route to the final, he only dropped two sets and in the final, he faced no break points. He is only the fourth man to win a major final without facing a break point since 1991.
"The facts speak for themselves,” said Zverev after the match. “He's won all the Grand Slams on hard courts since last year. He's lost, I think, three matches on hard courts since last year. ... He's in a different universe right now to anyone else.”
Keys quietly made her way through the draw until her showstopping performance in the semifinals, where she upset the number one seed, Iga Swiatek, to reach her second Grand Slam final. However, many looked back at her run to the final, and easy was the last word to describe her journey. She beat four top ten players, and five of her seven matches went to three sets.
On the men’s doubles side, Finland’s Henri Heliovaara and Great Britain’s Henry Patten defeated Italians Simone Bolleli and Andrea Vavassori to claim their second Grand Slam title as a duo. For the women, the number one seeds, Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend beat number three seeds, Su-Wei Hsieh and Jelena Ostapenko. With this win, Siniakova sits at the top of the PIF WTA doubles rankings.
Three other GATC players made statements for themselves at this year’s tournament. Australian Emerson Jones, 2024 GATC Junior Invitational champion, made her Grand Slam debut but faced a tough opponent in Elena Rybakina in her first round. American Iva Jovic, at just 17 years old, made it to the second round in the women’s main draw, but also pulled Elena Rybakina as her opponent. Brazil’s João Fonseca roared through qualifying and pulled a massive upset against number nine seed, Andrey Rublev
It was another incredible effort from Alfie Hewett on the wheelchair men’s side. He took both the singles and doubles titles with fellow Brit, Gordon Reid. It was his fifth Australian Open finals appearance in singles, and his second title. Hewett and Reid are currently riding a six Australian Open championship victory in doubles.
