No better way to start and finish the year than with two Grand Slam titles. That is how 2024 concluded for both Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka who both took home the Australian Open and US Open titles in dominant fashion in this 2024 season.
Even after a tumultuous start to the tournament, it clearly did not phase Sinner’s US Open run to the finals. The only set dropped en route to the championship was in the first round to American Mackenzie McDonald. Sinner’s 2024 hard court record is an astounding 35-2.
Sinner became the first Italian to win the US Open, with his 2024 season without a doubt being his best. He currently stands at a 55-5 record and six titles. He also is on an 11-match win streak since the start of Cincinnati, where he also took the title.
American Taylor Fritz capped off an amazing US Open tournament. After defeating compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals, Fritz was vying to become the first American to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Although he fell short, the Americans on both the men’s and women’s side had a strong showing at their home slam.
After losing out to American Coco Gauff last year in the finals, Sabalenka was able to rise to the occasion, defeating American Jessica Pegula in the championship, 7-5, 7-5. She now holds two Australian Open and one US Open titles.
It was all first timers on the doubles side. In men’s doubles, Australian duo Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell took home the 2024 title defeating Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz in the final. Lydumyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko grabbed the women’s doubles championship. Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori saved match point to defeat Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young in the mixed doubles final. All champions had never won a Grand Slam title before.
On the junior's side, 2024 GATC player Wakana Sonobe lost to Brit Mika Stojsavljevic in the girl’s final. En route to her victory, Stojsavljevic defeated 2024 GATC player and American Iva Jovic in the semifinals.
